Ford’s new C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is expected to deliver a competitive range that will minimize trips to the gas station. The new PHEV is expected to achieve more than 20 miles of electric-only range and a 550-mile overall range—but what does that mean? It means that the C-MAX Energi will become the first plug-in hybrid vehicle that would have the ability to drive the length from Sacramento to San Diego—a trip that could take up to 9 hours. Such a range would also mean that the average American could comfortably commute without having to use gas. In an effort to keep up with more user-friendly technology, Ford will also offer their MyFord Mobile smartphone application as well as the latest generation of SmartGauge with EcoGuide which will display information such as instantaneous fuel economy on one of two LCD screens. Ford’s latest lineup prominently features other electric vehicles including the Focus Electric and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. Their C-MAX Hybrid, along with several other vehicles, will be domestically produced at their Michigan Assembly Plant.

Ford Motor Company, based in Dearborn, Michigan, is based on the innovative mind of Henry Ford. Following Ford Motor Company’s founding in 1903, the first Ford, a Model A, was sold in Detroit—and the rest was history. Unlike other automakers of the time, Ford decided to bring cars and exciting ones at that to the common man. To this date, newer innovations, such as electric drive technologies in modern day cars, live up to Ford’s legacy, as evident in the new models and technologies the auto manufacturer releases each year. Ford has consistently been at the forefront of electric vehicle technology, having perfected it for over a decade. Not surprisingly, Ford was the first to introduce a hybrid SUV to the public. With new products coming soon, Ford will offer the following options by Fall 2012: plug-in hybrid or electric options for their Focus, Fusion (named the 2010 North American Car of the Year), and Transit Connect models. Their Focus Electric is equipped with state of the art technology including a map-based navigation system. Future models will also be generously equipped with new technology as well as having impressive fuel efficiency. For example, the Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid scheduled to arrive this fall is expected to deliver more than 100 MPGe, a mile per gallon equivalency metric for electrified vehicles. Other Ford vehicles that will boast similar features include the upcoming releases, the 2013 C-MAX hybrid, C-MAX Energi, Fusion hybrid and the Fusion Energi. The American automaker has an ambitious and admirable checklist for working toward sustainability. Goals include volume expansion of hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies and continued weight reduction through use of advanced materials.
