Tesla Motors was founded in 2003 in Silicon Valley, California in an effort to show how cool electric vehicles could be. Less than 10 years later, the automaker has far exceeded anyone’s expectations on just how any car, especially electric, could be.

In early 2008, Tesla Motors released their Roadster model, which was on the wish lists of celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jay Leno. Now in 2012, there are over 2,300 Roadsters driving in more than 37 countries and is still one of the world’s most desired cars. The Roadster can accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 3.7 seconds and drive 245 miles per charge—all with zero tailpipe emissions.

This summer, Tesla’s Model S hit the streets to much acclaim. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 5.6 seconds, drive 300 miles at 55 mph per charge, and just like the Roadster, it does not contain a tailpipe.

Tesla’s main goals when developing their advanced batteries and powertrains are to decrease global fuel dependence as well as driving down the cost of electric vehicles. You can expect Tesla to implement these goals in their upcoming Tesla Model X, scheduled to deliver by 2014.
